I have an 88 BMW K75s with 35,000 miles. When I took it out for a spin
this morning, I tried to put it in 1st gear at the stop sign. I
squeezed the clutch lever, and shifted into 1st. When I released the
clutch lever, I heard a horrible grinding noise and the bike would not
go forward. The grinding noise did not stop when I squeezed the clutch
lever again. When I rode the bike last, the shifting had been unusually
difficult, but wasn't grinding.I have replaced the clutch cable less
than a month ago. I thought that the clutch cable might be loose, so I
tightened it as much as I could, but it still won't go into gear. It
does the same thing in all gears. Any suggestions??
thanks,

Have you ever lubed the tranny/clutch input shaft splines on the bike? I
ask because that is the usual cause for a BMW to difficult shifting (other
than their typical box-o-rocks tranny noise on shifting). Other than
blowing out the splines, I'd suspect the tranny shaft has gone south.

Put in on the center stand and listen to where the noise is coming from:
clutch, tranny, or driveline.

'Fraid I'd have to agree. If it's the splines, you'd be able to spin
the rear wheel by hand even though the tranny was engaged in gear.

clutch, tranny, or driveline.
I wouldn't try running it with a failed component, as you might well be
making things worse. If the splines are gone it probably wouldn't
matter but if it's in the tranny then running it stands an excellant
chance of doing more damage.

For openers, drain the tranny and look for metal bits. A little
bit of flourlike metal paste is normal. Anything other than very fine
paste is cause for alarm. If there's no shrapnel in the tranny
oil, then there's a good chance the clutch splines let go. Either
case sounds like a tranny rebuild.

I agree. Splines with no lube, do cause a terrible grinding, thrashing
noise and after that, you can try any gear you want to but you won't go
anywhere.

It sounds like it's time for a new clutch.
